For International and ESL students

The University of Adelaide is committed to making your time as an international student enjoyable and productive. The Writing Centre provides significant support for international students and students from non-English Speaking Backgrounds (NESB).

Thw Writing Centre provides Workshops on developing your academic learning and language skills, such as, understanding lectures, participating in tutorial discussions, and avoiding plagiarism. These sessions are designed to help you survive and thrive with your tertiary studies.

 
Communicating with Confidence

A series of conversation sessions are held for students who have English as a second (or subsequent) language. These sessions have as a starting point some topic of current interest and are both informative and fun. The sessions are offered on Mondays, 12.10pm - 1.00pm, in Semester 1.

Volunteer Program for conversation development (ESL students)

An internationally recognised volunteer program is also available to provide language support for students from non-English Speaking Backgrounds (NESB) who have an additional need to improve their oral communication. (See the Adelaidean article: Volunteer program wins international praise.)

The Volunteer Program currently has about 170 trained volunteers who work with international students. Volunteers are linked with one or more students, who then arrange informal meetings to suit their individual needs and time availability. Our volunteers are men and women from all walks of life; from those who are actively engaged in work or study but spend some lunchtimes with their students, to retirees with a broader range of time options.
