Photonics leader named Australian Academy of Science Fellow

Centre of Light for Life Director Professor Kishan Dholakia

Adelaide University Professor Kishan Dholakia has earned national recognition for his research, with his peers electing him a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science.

Professor Dholakia, an ARC Laureate Fellow and Director of the Centre of Light for Life, is an internationally renowned research scientist, leader, and mentor whose work focuses on the field of photonics - the science of light.

His contributions span fundamental advances in optical physics through to transformative interdisciplinary applications, particularly in collaboration with biologists and clinicians.

Professor Dholakia research has influenced areas ranging from precision measurement and imaging to biomedical diagnostics and therapeutics.

“I am deeply honoured to be elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science,” Professor Dholakia said.

“This recognition is shared with the many team members and collaborators around the world who have supported and contributed to my work throughout my career. Their dedication has been central to this achievement.

“This honour affirms the impact of my team’s research and strengthens my commitment to advancing photonics and its transdisciplinary potential at Adelaide University. It has been a wonderful journey to witness the growth of the Centre of Light for Life over the past three years.

“I hope this election brings greater visibility to photonics research at the Adelaide University and motivates others to remain dedicated and engaged in this vibrant and rapidly evolving field.”

Adelaide University Professor Anton Middelberg FTSE FNAI, Deputy Vice Chancellor – Research and Innovation said Professor Dholakia’s recognition reflected the University’s leading strength in optical science.

“As Director of the Centre of Light for Life, Professor Dholakia has played a pivotal role in accelerating Adelaide as a growing hub for photonics research and innovation,” Professor Middelberg said.

“Under his leadership, the Centre has expanded its research footprint, strengthened global collaborations, and attracted emerging talent to South Australia.

“His work exemplifies the University’s strategic focus on interdisciplinary innovation and global research excellence.”
