Two outstanding alumni awarded 2023 John Monash Scholarships

The University of Adelaide wishes to congratulate and commend two alumni who have been recognised in the nation’s most prestigious postgraduate awards, the 2023 General Sir John Monash Scholars

The scholarships are awarded to outstanding students with leadership potential who wish to study overseas. 

Just 15 scholarships were awarded nationally including to two University of Adelaide alumni, Alex Schutz and Henry Marshall.

The John and Anna Belfer Trust John Monash Scholar: Alex Schutz

Alex, a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (Mechatronic) with Bachelor of Mathematical and Computer Sciences graduate, was awarded the The John and Anna Belfer Trust John Monash Scholar and Henry, a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) graduate, received the Chairman’s Circle John Monash Scholar.

“I feel really honoured to have received this opportunity,” Alex said.

With this scholarship, Alex aims to study human-robot interaction at a world-leading institution overseas. 

“I hope to be able to use the knowledge I gain to design robots for people-facing uses. I'm really passionate about using technology for social good, and I think that robots have so much potential to be able to change the world.”

Alex intends to study a Master of Science in Systems, Control and Robotics at KTH Royal Institute of Technology.

Henry is a young clinician-scientist with a passion for the field of neurodegenerative diseases. He is on a bold mission to transform the management of dementia through the translation of genomic and bioinformatic based tools.

“I am exceptionally grateful for this opportunity, and to all those who have helped me along the way. This scholarship fundamentally enables me to gain the highest quality training in genomic research. I hope to then return to Australia with the skills that will allow me to have a measurable impact on healthcare in this country,” Henry said.

Henry aims to complete his postgraduate education at Cambridge University.

The University commends Alex and Henry for their career and study successes and congratulates them again on this well-deserved accolade.
