Welcome to the Dental Practice Education Research Unit

The Dental Practice Education Research Unit is a joint venture between The University of Adelaide and Colgate Oral Care and it was established in November 1991. Our headquarters are at the Australian Research Centre for Population Oral Health at The University of Adelaide, Australia.

Our objective is to identify and meet the information needs of not only the dental professionals and also the general public while promoting the provision of preventive services.

Programs provided include:

  • Online Continuing Professional Development Program (CPD)                                                                          CPD program is essentially based on the dental practice education material produced by the DPERU, which can be found on this website.
  • The Fluoride Update
    The Fluoride Update Program was developed in response to frequent requests from dental practitioners, and consists of a set of information sheets from the cariology area on the issue of fluorides in today's dental practice. Information sheets have companion summary pamphlets for use as a guide for discussion with patients.
  • Colgate Special Topics                                                                                                                               The Colgate Special Topics are currently being developed to provide continuing education in important topics. The first topic, Smoking and Oral Health, was released in Oct 2005. Special Topic No. 2, Erosion was released in Jan 2006 followed by No 3, Diabetes, in Dec 2006, No. 4, Pregnancy in Nov/Dec 2008, No. 5, Oral cancer in Apr 2011, No. 6, Dentine hypersensitivity in Sep 2011, No. 7, Disabilities in Mar 2012, No. 8, Heart Diseases in May 2013, No. 9, Dementia in Nov 2014, No. 10, Caries Risk Assessment in Sep 2015, No. 11, Dental Fear and Anxiety in Mar 2016, No. 12, Breastfeeding and Oral Health in Dec 2016, No. 13, Periodontal disease and Obesity in Feb 2017, No. 14, Sugars-rich Diets and Oral Health in July 2017,  No. 15, Caries Risk Management Protocols in Dec 2017, No. 16, Impacted Third Molars in Dec 2018, No. 17, Oral Health of Indigenous People in Mar 2019, No. 18, Root Caries in Sep 2019, No. 19, Traumatic Dental Injuries in Jan 2020, No. 20, Human Papillomavirus and Oropharyngeal Carcinoma in Aug 2020, No. 21, Nutrition and Oral Health in Feb 2021, No. 22, Oral Health of Medically Compromised Patients in Sep 2021, No. 23, Infection control measures in standard dental practice - Importance of preprocedural rinsing in Apr 2022 and No. 24, End-Stage Kidney Disease and Oral Health in Oct 2022.
  • Oral Hygiene
    The Oral Hygiene pamphlets "Effective toothbrushing" and "Cleaning between the teeth" answered some common questions and provided practical techniques about toothbrushing and flossing.
  • The Colgate Caries Control Program
    This is a continuing education program which was offered Australia-wide to dentists, dental therapists and dental hygienists.
  • The Colgate Periodontal Education Program
    The Colgate Periodontal Education Program aimed to stimulate and support the provision of periodontal care.
