Sugars-rich Diets and Oral Health
On average, Australians and New Zealanders consume 14 teaspoons of sugars (60 grams) per day. High consumption of sugars is the primary cause of dental decay and other health problems including overweight or obesity, diabetes, heart diseases and even some cancers. Dental decay can largely be prevented by reducing sugars intake. This special topic describes the classification of sugars, the most common sources of sugars and the link between sugars consumption and oral as well as general health. Updated WHO recommendations for sugars intake and the role of dental practitioners on this topic are also highlighted.
