Course Learning OutcomesIn 2018, the topic of this course will be Statistical Learning.
This course will be based on the book, “The elements of statistical learning data mining, inference, and prediction / Trevor Hastie, Robert Tibshirani, Jerome Friedman.; 2nd ed.; c2009”.
Topics covered will include an overview of supervised learning, review of linear models, classification problems, bias vs variance, shrinkage methods, assessment of error, cross-validation, smoothing and spline based methods, tree based methods, unsupervised learning, clustering, principal components.

Learning & Teaching Activities
Learning & Teaching ModesThe lecturer guides the students through the course material in 30 lectures. Students are expected to engage with the material in the lectures. Interaction with the lecturer and discussion of any difficulties that arise during the lecture is encouraged. Fortnightly assignments help students strengthen their understanding of the theory and practical work, and to help them gauge their progress.
