Grading adjustments

    Expand
  • What were the temporary grading adjustments used in 2020?

To ensure that you were not disadvantaged in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, in 2020 and the first part of 2021 the University made the following temporary changes to its grading system:

    • Pass Non-Graded* (PNG)
    • Fails converted to Withdraw No Fails* (WNF*)
    • Result Pending

Pass Non-Graded* (PNG):  students were given the option to choose whether to have any passing grade from the eligible periods converted into the Pass Non-Graded* (PNG) grade unless the course had been exempted from this adjustment (see below). If students chose this option, their PNG grade would not count towards their grade point average (GPA) calculation. Students were given this option following, rather than prior to, receiving their results.

The following statement will be added to academic transcripts for students who requested a PNG: “Pass Non-Graded* awarded during COVID-19 is not included in the GPA calculation".

    PNG exceptions were:
Major research project courses in Honours, MPhil and Masters Coursework programs (except the embedded Honours degrees in Engineering); and; some undergraduate courses that already award an NGP. These courses use Result Pending (RP) grades to manage student extensions if needed.

Academic Board has confirmed that the PNG ceased to be effective from Semester 1 2021, reverting to the original Grade Descriptors as per the Assessment for Coursework Programs Policy.

Fails converted to Withdraw No Fails* (WNF*): All Fail grades from the eligible periods in 2020 were changed to WNF*. The WNF* grading adjustment does not apply in 2021. A WNF* grade does not count towards GPA calculations. Fail grades include: Withdraw Fail (WF), Fail No Submission (FNS) and Fail (F). WNF* exception: a Fail grade under the Academic Integrity Policy will stand.

The following statement will be added to academic transcripts for students who received a WNF* due to a grading adjustment: “Withdraw No Fail* awarded during COVID-19 in 2020 was an approved academic adjustment”. The transcript text will not be applied to a student who dropped a course or courses after census, where a system WNF will be applied.

Results Pending (RP): RP could be utilised where components of courses are postponed to subsequent teaching periods. Your Course Coordinator (or Academic delegate) will advise where a course and/or student is approved for a RP.

Academic Board has confirmed has the RP will be available for certain teaching periods in the first half of 2021.

Please refer to FAQ “Which teaching periods do the grading adjustments apply to?” for a list of teaching periods where a grading adjustment can be applied.

  • Do the grading adjustments still apply in 2021?

The Withdraw No Fail* (WNF*) grading adjustment is not maintained in 2021.

The Pass Non-Graded* (PNG) grading adjustment was available for certain teaching periods with commencement dates prior to Semester 1, 2021. The PNG was discontinued from Semester 1 2021.

The Result Pending grading adjustment is available for certain teaching periods in the first half of 2021.

Please refer to FAQ “Which teaching periods do the grading adjustments apply to?” for a list of teaching periods where a grading adjustment can be applied.

Students whose studies are being impacted by medical, compassionate or extenuating circumstances may seek to apply for a Modified Arrangement  where eligible. A range of support services  for students are now also available online.

  • What is a Non-Graded Pass (NGP) and Pass Non-Graded (PNG)?

The Pass Non-Graded* (PNG) was a temporary adjustment introduced to support students during COVID-19, without any adverse impact to existing grade schemes and grade point average (GPA) calculations.

The Non-Graded Pass (NGP) is a regular grade on the University’s grading schemes policy.

Non-Graded Pass (NGP) and Pass Non-Graded* (PNG) both mean you have passed the course in question, met the learning outcomes and achieved units of study to contribute to your degree completion. A NGP has a value of 4 and adds to the GPA calculation.  The PNG grade did not have a value applied, so did not contribute to your GPA calculation.

For more information see the University Grade Descriptors.

  • How do I change my grades?

All grades will be made available on Access Adelaide as normal.

Once your grade is available, you will be able to submit an online form to request a Pass Non-Graded* (PNG) as your final grade on your academic transcript. The link to the form is in Access Adelaide and can be found
    here.

For a PNG change request to be processed, the academic results for the requested course must be published first in your Access Adelaide account. If a PNG change request is submitted prior to academic results being published in Access Adelaide, students will be advised to resubmit the form after your results have been released.

If you have been approved for one or more of your grades to be converted to a Pass Non-Graded (PNG), please allow up to 24 hours for the GPA to be updated on your record. It is important to take the GPA update time frame into consideration when reviewing or purchasing an academic transcript after you have received approval notification for a PNG change request.

The following statement will be added to academic transcripts for students who request a PNG: “Pass Non-Graded* awarded during COVID-19 is not included in the GPA calculation”

Fail grades that were eligible to be converted to Withdraw No Fail* (WNF*) were converted automatically by the University. Fail grades include: Withdraw Fail (WF), Fail No Submission (FNS) and Fail (F). A Fail grade under the
    Academic Integrity Policy will stand.

The following statement will be added to academic transcripts for students who had received a WNF* due to a grading adjustment in 2020: “Withdraw No Fail* awarded during COVID-19 in 2020 was an approved academic adjustment”. The transcript text will not be applied to students who dropped a course/s after census, where a system WNF will be applied.

  • How long will I have to decide if I want a Pass Non-Graded?

Students are given 14 days from the Replacement/Additional Assessment (R/AA) results release date to submit a Pass Non-Graded* request form. The deadlines are outlined here, noting that the PNG is only applicable in 2021 for teaching periods which commenced prior to Semester 1. Teaching periods that do not have a formal Replacement/Additional Assessment Result release date will have 14 days from the primary result release date.

Where a student has a Result Pending (RP) or receives a result change after the PNG cut-off date, they will be provided 10 business days from the date that the final grade was published in Access Adelaide to request a PNG.

  • I am an Honours, Masters or MPhil student doing a major research project. Can I opt for a Pass Non-Graded for all of my courses?

Only the major research project courses in Honours, Masters and MPhil programs were exempted from the Pass Non-Graded* (PNG) grading adjustment (except for the embedded Honours degrees in Engineering) when the PNG was in operation. Under the modified arrangements policy students will be able to seek a Result Pending (RP) grade. Students can discuss modified arrangements for research projects with their supervisor and program coordinator. This exemption will ensure students are not disadvantaged for future PhD scholarship opportunities and applications for further study.

  • Can I get extensions on assignments?

If you have a valid reason for missing the due date, you may be eligible for an extension. As soon as you become aware that you may not be able to complete the assignment on time, contact your course coordinator. It is expected that you do this well before the due date.

You may also be required to submit an Application for Assessment Extension form and supply supporting evidence for your request, such as a medical certificate. Accommodation has been made for COVID-19 related circumstances e.g. inability to provide supporting documentation [Part B of the application form].

  • Is my placement, internship or clinical placement cancelled?

Some placements, internships and clinical placements may have been modified. Each Faculty will provide specific advice to students who have been impacted by placement, internship or clinical placement cancellations or postponements. In some cases alternative arrangements have been made (i.e. online/remote placements). If you have a query, please contact your Faculty for specific advice.

  • My placement or clinic has been cancelled, will this impact my progression or graduation?

We are committed to ensuring all our students will meet the necessary requirements to ensure they can progress to subsequent study periods, graduate and/or register for professional practice (if applicable). This may impact the duration of the academic year and the time of your graduation. Please monitor your University email account for information and updates specific to your program.

  • Will there be an opportunity to make up missed placement or clinical hours?

We are committed to ensuring all our students will meet the necessary requirements to ensure you can graduate and register for professional practice, if this is a requirement of your degree. Please monitor your University email account for information and updates specific to your program.

  • What should I do if I get ill while on placement?

If you start to feel unwell while on placement, please speak to your placement supervisor and notify the Clinical Placement Team. If you develop any symptoms related to COVID-19, you should follow the SA Health advice and get tested and self-isolate until the results of the test are known.
