This five-year degree combines the disciplines of petroleum engineering, and civil and structural engineering to equip graduates with broad expertise that can be applied to a range of complex challenges.

Petroleum engineering is the practical application of physics, mathematics, chemistry and geology, combined with economic principles, to the recovery of petroleum. Petroleum engineers are designers. They create, plan and supervise all aspects of petroleum recovery: helping to find oil and gas; assessing how much is there; designing the wells and processing facilities to get as much out as possible; supervising and optimising production operations and ultimately, planning for the abandonment of the project. All of these designs and operational plans must be economic and safe from a human and environmental perspective.

Civil and structural engineering is concerned with the planning, design, construction and maintenance of infrastructure in an environmentally sustainable manner.

With a specialist skill set across two complementary engineering fields, graduates can enjoy greater scope of career prospects and a competitive edge in the job market.

    Year 12 Applicants You must not have completed more than 2 years full time equivalent university study (48 units). You compete for a place with your Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR).
    Prerequisites SACE Stage 2: Mathematical Studies, Physics plus one of Specialist Mathematics or Chemistry. IB: either Mathematics (HL grade 3) and Physics (SL grade 4/HL grade 3); or, Chemistry (SL grade 4/HL grade 3), Physics (SL grade 4/HL grade 3) & Mathematics (SL grade 4/HL grade 3).

    Alternative entry pathways
    • Higher Education applicants
      You must have completed at least half a year full time equivalent higher education study. A Grade Point Average (GPA) is calculated for each separate program you have undertaken (apart from some double degree programs where the GPA is combined). You compete on the basis of your best GPA.
    • VET applicants
      You must have completed an AQF Certificate IV or above from a Registered Training Organisation. Your application will be ranked according to the level of the award.
    • Special Entry applicants
      You must be 18 years or over before 1 February 2017. If you have studied at higher education level in the last two years (for 2017 entry this means you were enrolled in either 2016 or 2015), you must not have accumulated more than a TOTAL of 2 years full-time (or part-time equivalent) higher education study (ie. including any study prior to 2015). If you meet this criteria, you will be ranked according to your result in the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT). Your STAT result is not weighted between verbal and quantitative components. Indigenous applicants may be eligible for entry through the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Access Scheme. See Wirltu Yarlu for further information.

  • Degree Structure

    The Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (Petroleum, Civil and Structural) builds a strong foundation of mathematics, physics, geology, geophysics, computer applications and engineering principles.

    Over the course of the program, the subjects studied change from more general engineering topics to very specific petroleum, civil and structural engineering topics. There is also a focus on management and business-related aspects. This integrated structure makes the petroleum, civil and structural engineering teaching curriculum unique.

    The first two years of the academic program are spent developing an understanding of the foundation subjects of petroleum, civil and structural engineering. In the third year, these areas of study are further developed through an additional range of advanced topics.

    In the fourth year, students put their civil and structural engineering knowledge into practice via major design, research and experimental projects, including a civil and structural engineering project.

    In the fifth year, students expand their technical petroleum engineering knowledge and develop business skills such as economic evaluation and project management, and undertake a final year petroleum engineering project.

    Students are required to complete 12 weeks of approved practical experience.

    Students who have not passed SACE Stage 2 Specialist Maths are required to enrol in MATHS 1013 Mathematics IM as a prerequisite to enrolling in MATHS 1011 Mathematics IA. The satisfactory completion of MATHS 1013 Mathematics IM is in addition to the normal requirements of this program. Students may manage their enrolment by enrolling in MATHS 1013 Mathematics IM in semester I, followed by MATHS 1011 Mathematics IA in semester 2, and MATHS 1012 Mathematics IB in summer school.

    *Students who choose to complete a Civil Honours Project in addition to a Petroleum Honours project must undertake the following 3 courses C&ENVENG 3222 Research Methodologies and Project Management, C&ENVENG 4222A Research Project A and C&ENVENG 4222B Research Project B. The courses must be taken in the order commencing in semester 2. C&ENVENG 3222 is taken in lieu of C&ENVENG 3007 Structural Steel Design and C&ENVENG 4222A and C&ENVENG 4222B are presented in lieu of 6 units of electives. Note completion of Part B is dependent on the completion of Part A in order for 6 units to count towards the program.

    Unless exempted by the Faculty, all international students are required to take Engineering Communication. At the commencement of study, the Faculty will advise which course is to be replaced by ENG 3003 Engineering Communication EAL.
