The Bachelor of Media gives students the high-level skills and technical expertise that serve as the foundation for a successful career in this dynamic industry. They will develop an advanced ability to communicate, conduct research and solve problems in a global media environment.
The degree focuses on the latest developments in digital and interactive media and how these interact with traditional forms of media. Students will develop professional-level skills through a variety of core courses in areas of digital media, media policy and law, writing, research and reporting, and digital story-telling. Elective courses broaden the study experience and are offered in creative media practices such as visual and online design, radio and video production.
Students can intern with a professional media organisation to gain crucial real-world experience. Participating in an internship will give students the employment edge as employers seek graduates who show an understanding of the media through industry-based experience.

- Higher Education applicants
You must have completed at least half a year full time equivalent university study. A Grade Point Average (GPA) is calculated for each separate program you have undertaken (apart from some double degree programs where the GPA is combined). You compete on the basis of your best GPA. GPAs earned from non-award study within the Faculty of Arts are also considered.
- VET applicants
You must have completed an AQF Certificate IV or above from a Registered Training Organisation. Your application will be ranked according to the level of the award.
- Special Entry applicants
You must be 18 years or over before 1 February 2018. If you have studied at higher education level in the last two years (for 2018 entry this means you were enrolled in either 2017 or 2016), you must not have accumulated more than a TOTAL of 2 years full-time (or part-time equivalent) higher education study (ie. including any study prior to 2016). If you meet this criteria, you will be ranked according to your result in the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT). Your STAT result is not weighted between verbal and quantitative components. Indigenous applicants may be eligible for entry through the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Access Scheme. See Wirltu Yarlu for further information.

All Bachelor of Media students have the opportunity to take part in a media industry placement through the elective course Media Industry Transitions. This path is highly recommended for those who wish to enter the industry directly after completion of their undergraduate degree.
The placement allows students to gain meaningful work experience by contributing toward a host organisation project. Students are given the opportunity to negotiate their own placements with organisations of their choice, after discussion with the Convenor of Media Industry Transitions. The student needs to ensure that their industry placement does not clash with their other courses.

Areas of Specialisation
Marketing is an important business function of any organisation – it’s how companies figure out what customers need and want. Marketers plan, coordinate and direct advertising strategies and campaigns, public relations, sales and marketing activities, such as market research, to determine new markets for goods and services.
This specialisation has a focus on marketing and communications, consumer behaviour, marketing strategies, brand management and international marketing. Students will learn how to prepare marketing reports and plans, undertake diagnostic case studies, analyse advertisements in a variety of media, and apply market research. They will analyse data relating to consumer patterns and preferences, and predict current and future trends. Students will develop high level communication and research skills for a career that could see them supporting business growth or work on campaigns in advertising or government. Students will learn how to advise on all elements of marketing such as product mix, pricing, advertising and sales promotion, selling and distribution channels.
Are you someone who loves to explore issues and get to the bottom of things? Designed for those who are naturally inquisitive, studying journalism allows students to focus on the fundamentals of gathering information and writing for news media.
Journalists get excited about finding out what is happening in the world around them and are constantly on the hunt for reliable information. Our degree covers the principles of research, writing and production and will develop the core skills students require as a journalist: storytelling ability, curiosity, time management to handle stress and deadlines, good news judgement and accuracy, how to network to make contacts and how to develop sources. Students will explore how to best present their message, using their skills with digital media to strike a balance between the multimedia involved and the message or information they wish to convey.
Students will develop key professional skills such as research and interviewing, news sourcing and writing for print, online and mobile media. They will explore the broader contexts of journalism, including elements of professionalism, integrity and ethics, reflective practice and the constantly changing news environment.
Graphic designers play a crucial role in today’s visual communication industries through the creation of publication and display materials using print, film, electronic, digital and other forms of visual media. Students will combine the latest design technologies with art and design principles to create their own visual communication texts. They will develop creative problem-solving and analytical skills, while discovering how to differentiate between graphic styles, materials and ideas.
This specialisation gives in-depth knowledge of commercial practices within the graphic design industry. We guide students through an intense studio-based program using industry standard software. Students will learn high-level technical production and pre-press skills, enabling them to see a project through from initial concept to final publication.
The media industry needs innovative and adaptable designers who can create effective, attractive and marketable products from concept to prototype. To gain the kind of practical experience employers are looking for in graduates, our students benefit from collaboration with the TAFESA Centre for Creative Industries at the Adelaide College of the Arts located in Light Square, Adelaide CBD.
Like never before, we are living in a visually driven world. In the Bachelor of Media (Photographic Imaging) students will use digital tools, including photographic and video cameras to express creativity.
The degree gives students a thorough understanding of photographic and visual communication skills within an elected field of commercial photography. They will establish principles and practice for working with digital images, including understanding their technical properties and parameters. Students will become highly skilled at using software tools for cataloguing, editing, processing and storing images. They get to experiment with manipulating and enhancing images to create their own personal style and meet a client’s brief.
Students will learn in a world-class photographic studio, including a full cyclorama, and acquire a range of photographic and video techniques for use in advertising, editorials, portraiture, still-life, architecture, fashion and illustration.
Classes in photographic imaging are taught in collaboration with the TAFESA Centre for Creative Industries at the Adelaide College of the Arts located in Light Square, Adelaide CBD.
This degree focuses on the use of cutting edge digital technologies in song-writing and production. Students are given the opportunity to develop a unique style of composition and are exposed to up-to-the minute research in contemporary music history and analysis. They will develop a range of music literacy skills, and engage with emerging technologies, giving them the edge in adapting to the dynamic nature of the contemporary music industry.
For students who love art and video games, this degree lets students combine artistic and technical skills to build a career in this in-demand industry. Game artists create the characters, environments and vehicles that appear in video games. Students learn skills in 3D modelling and texturing for interactive game media and showcase their creative ability by designing their own unique digital entertainment experience using the latest technology.
Courses cover the practical and theoretical aspects of software manipulation and file development processes so students have a clear understanding of where game design and imagery fit in to the workflow of a production.

CGI and Visual Effects
The film and television industries are increasingly dependent on the use of computer-generated imagery (CGI) and other visual effects. The demand for film and TV content has never been greater with global streaming services now heavily involved in content production. Students will gain extensive technical experience in this degree that will unleash their creativity in CGI and visual effects.
This specialisation has a focus on developing creative visual effects and 3D computer animation for TV, cinema and online platforms. Students will learn the practical and theoretical aspects of the movie and TV making process to develop an understanding of where computer generated imagery fits into the workflow of a production.
To give students the optimal study experience, we have teamed up with the TAFESA Centre for Creative Industries at the Adelaide College of the Arts located in Light Square, Adelaide CBD to access the latest equipment and expertise of professionals who know the industry.
Sonic Arts gives advanced skills to express creative ideas in sound. Student’s understanding of contemporary digital technologies will help them to explore different ways of making sound and how to artistically and technically control it. Students will develop the ability to record, mix, produce and master sound engineering. They will examine how sound is used in film, television and games, and its psychological and aesthetic effects. Their creativity will be displayed through interactive design and computer music composition, and show a deep understanding of the historical development of sound in the media.
Sonic Arts students will undertake studies in composition, studio recording, live performance and digital media, providing a solid conceptual and practical foundation to build a career in this rapidly expanding field.
