What will you do?
This degree is hands-on and prepares you to champion biodiversity conservation in both theory and practise. You will:
- learn to identify plants and animals in natural settings
- conduct field research as part of long-term, on-going monitoring programs
- apply theory and research to pressing conservation problems
- consider the social, political and economic constraints of the field
- develop the skills to plan, execute and monitor habitat restoration programs for declining species
- build valuable connections with established organisations—from Arid Recovery and BioR in South Australia to Conservation International.
Where could it take you?
Our conservation graduates go on to all sorts of exciting and rewarding careers. You might reconstruct local habitats or lead breeding programs in sanctuaries. You could monitor the movements of animals with satellite tracking and other remote techniques. Perhaps you’ll work in academia, researching your passion and inspiring the next generation of conservationists.

You must not have completed more than 2 years full time equivalent university study (48 units). You compete for a place with your Selection Rank (ATAR plus any applicable adjustment factors). Higher Education Study You must have completed at least six months full time equivalent higher education study (the number of courses and units will vary depending on your prior institution however at the University of Adelaide, this equates to 4 courses / 12 units). A Grade Point Average (GPA) is calculated for each separate program you have undertaken (apart from some double degree programs where the GPA is combined). You compete on the basis of your best GPA. Vocational Education and Training (VET) study You must have completed an AQF Certificate IV or above from a Registered Training Organisation. Work and life experience To be eligible to sit the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) as as pathway for entry, you must be 18 years or over before 1 February 2020. If you have studied at higher education level in the last two years (for 2020 entry this means you were enrolled in either 2019 or 2018), you must not have accumulated more than a TOTAL of 2 years full-time (or part-time equivalent) higher education study (ie. including any study prior to 2018). If you meet this criteria, you will be ranked according to your result in the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT). Your STAT result is not weighted between verbal and quantitative components. Industry PlacementYou’ll spend five days in the field at the multi-award winning Arid Recovery near Roxby Downs, learning to trap, handle and record data on small mammals and reptiles.
Plus, in your third year, you’ll do a capstone course which involves field-based research projects.

The Faculty of Sciences recommends students who want to undertake an exchange in an overseas university plan to go in Semester 2 of Level 2 and/or Semester 1 of Level 3.
Degree StructureThe Bachelor of Science (Wildlife Conservation Biology) offers a combination of theory and practical experience in the integrative disciplines of landscape ecology, wildlife genetics, endangered species biology and pest management.
In second and third year, students engage with conservation-active University of Adelaide staff and our research partners to undertake specialist training in animal and plant identification and participate in meaningful field work linked to current long-term research and monitoring programs. These unique real-world experiences equip students with the practical and professional skills sought by public and private sector employers both in Australia and overseas.
