Where could it take you?
You’ll graduate with the skills and knowledge to respond to the intellectual, social and emotional needs of students in the middle years. You will be fully qualified to register as a teacher Australia-wide. If you’d like to teach overseas, your degree will be valid in most other countries. An education background will also prove invaluable in a wide range of careers servicing communities outside of the classroom.

^Teaching areas include: classroom music, instrumental music, economics, English, geography, history, languages (must be taken at advanced level), linguistics (EAL/D), mathematical sciences, media.
- Mid-year entry will only be available to domestic students. Due to the program structure and professional experience placements, students commencing mid-year study will complete their program in 4.25 years instead of 4 years.
- International students who are currently studying at the University of Adelaide may apply to this program mid-year via internal transfer. Approval is based on your past and current enrolments, and is assessed by the Faculty of Arts on a case-by-case basis.
Note: On-campus attendance is required for courses in the fourth year of this program. if you are a continuing student in the program and are unable to attend campus, please contact the Faculty of Arts for program advice.
For our students who are studying offshore in 2021 and 2022, the University will continue to offer high-quality access to the learning resources remotely for most programs. This includes all lectures, tutorials and other support material. |Recent Secondary Education||Applicants with recent secondary education are those whose admission is primarily based on the completion of Year 12 within the last two years, however if you completed your secondary education more than two years ago, you may still be able to be considered on the basis of your secondary schooling. You must not have completed more than 2 years full time equivalent university study (48 units). You must also undertake an audition/interview including an aural/theory test. You compete for a place based on your audition score. Indigenous applicants may be eligible for entry through the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Access Pathway. In accordance with national teacher education program standards, applicants must fulfil non-academic entry requirements. Applicants are required to submit a 400-600 word Teaching Capabilities Statement which speaks to motivation to become a teacher. The statement must address three themes: - understanding of the role of a teacher; - the personal and academic qualities possessed that will enable you to become an effective teacher; - your attitude to learning. Pathway students will be contacted directly by the university and asked to submit their statement at the end of their foundation program. Please note you may only submit one Teaching Capabilities Statement. Once you submit your statement you cannot make any changes or edits. Your submission will be final. All applicants must also attend and pass an audition/interview and a musicianship test. Selections for music programs are made on the basis of audition/interview scores combined with academic achievement and the musicianship test score. It is possible to audition for more than one instrument or study area if you have multiple interests. Auditions will be held in late November. |Higher Education Study||You must have completed at least six months full time equivalent higher education study (the number of courses and units will vary depending on your prior institution however at the University of Adelaide, this equates to 4 courses / 12 units). A Grade Point Average (GPA) is calculated for each separate program you have undertaken (apart from some double degree programs where the GPA is combined). You must also undertake an audition/interview including an aural/theory test. You compete for a place based on your audition score. Your best GPA is used in the case of a tie-breaker. |Work and life experience||To be eligible to sit the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) as as pathway for entry, you must be 18 years or over before 1 February 2022. If you have studied at higher education level in the last two years (for 2022 entry this means you were enrolled in either 2021 or 2020), you must not have accumulated more than a TOTAL of 2 years full-time (or part-time equivalent) higher education study (ie. including any study prior to 2020). You must also undertake an audition/interview including an aural/theory test. You compete for a place based on your audition score. Your STAT rank is used in the case of a tie-breaker. Criminal History Check - DCSI Clearance
A successful Department of Child and Social Inclusion (DCSI) Clearance is required by teacher employment authorities in South Australia. A successful DCSI is required prior to undertaking any professional experience placement which involves contact with minors (under 18 years of age). These placements form a compulsory part of the program. International students will be required to obtain a certificate from their home country.
Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE)
Prior to graduation, all students enrolled in Initial Teacher Education programs must successfully complete the LANTITE.

These scholarships, as well as many others funded by industry and non-profit organisations, are available to potential and currently enrolled students.

Professional Experience Placements form a compulsory part of the program. Students will be required to undertake a Child-related Employment screening through Department of Communities and Social Inclusion (DCSI). If a student fails to obtain clearance for any reason, the University cannot accept responsibility for obtaining a professional experience placement or any professional experience activity that a student may require to complete the course of study.
In addition, students who are completing any in-school activities or professional experience placements must undertake mandatory training in Responding to Abuse and Neglect prior to the commencement of the activity/placement. Students must provide documented evidence that shows that they have completed all of the required training.

Throughout the degree you will also undertake education courses and professional experience placements. The final year of study prepares you to be a teaching professional with the focus on curriculum, methodology, pedagogy and professional experience placements in schools.
The Bachelor of Teaching is for students who have not already commenced university study. If you have already commenced a degree, you should consider completing that degree and then apply for the Master of Teaching (Middle and Secondary). Students completing the requirements of the Bachelor of Teaching are eligible to gain credit towards the Master of Teaching (Middle and Secondary).
Working with Children Check (WWCC)
All people who work with children and young people will require a Working with Children Check (WWCC). A successful WWCC is required prior to undertaking any professional experience placement, including all in-school activities which involve contact with minors (people under 18 years of age). These placements and in-school activities are compulsory components of teaching degrees at the University of Adelaide.
From 1 July 2019 the Department of Child and Social Inclusion (DCSI) clearance will be replaced by the WWCC. If you have a valid relevant DCSI clearance you will need to apply for a WWCC under the new scheme when your current check is due for renewal. All checks for people working with children will be issued under the new scheme by July 2022.
It is the student’s responsibility to ensure they have a valid DCSI or WWCC prior to undertaking any professional experience placement or in-school activities.

Emergency Management (Education and Early Childhood Settings Vaccination) (COVID-19) Direction 2021.
Bachelor of Teaching preservice teachers must comply with legislative requirements pertaining to schools and the education and care of students and staff, including directions made under section 25 of the Emergency Management Act 2004, including the Emergency Management (Education and Early Childhood Settings Vaccination) (COVID-19) Direction 2021. You must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 with a TGA approved or recognised vaccine (or have a valid medical exemption). You will be expected to provide the University of Adelaide and host school with copies of evidence of your vaccination status (or valid medical exemption).
Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE)
Prior to commencing fourth year of the degree, all students must successfully complete both the literacy and numeracy components of the LANTITE. The LANTITE is administered through ACER. More information can be found at ACER.
This double degree program provides a professional qualification that is recognised for teacher registration purposes in South Australia. In most cases the qualification is portable to other states and overseas countries.

Example Study Plan
I really enjoyed being taught by practising teachers. They shared relevant and up-to-date examples of current curriculum, and the challenges that they face in the classroom. I really got a feel for what teaching is like and how to effectively engage students at the right level of challenge.
