  • Biography/ Background

    Associate Professor John Semmler was awarded a B.Appl.Sc (Exercise Science) degree from the University of South Australia, and a BSc (Hons) and PhD in Neurophysiology from the University of Adelaide. He received post-doctoral training in Clinical Neurology at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and in Integrative Physiology at the University of Colorado. He accepted an academic appointment at Deakin University in Melbourne in 2003, and joined the Discipline of Physiology at the University of Adelaide in 2005 where he is currently an Associate Professor in the School of Medical Sciences. His research interests focus on the cortical, spinal and neuromuscular mechanisms responsible for changes in motor performance throughout the lifespan. He has established and is the director of the Neurophysiology of Human Movement Laboratory, which uses sophisticated stimulation and neurophysiological recording and analysis techniques, including transcranial magnetic stimulation, peripheral nerve stimulation, and surface and intramuscular electromyography. His research aims to understand how the healthy nervous system functions to control movements and how it may be rehabilitated following injury or disease.
