Dr Nicolas Riesen

Dr Nicolas Riesen
  • Biography/ Background

Dr. Nick Riesen gained his PhD from The Australian National University with his thesis focusing on mode-division multiplexing for increasing optical fibre capacity. His research led to the development of various elegant waveguide-based solutions for mode multiplexing including tapered velocity mode couplers and multi-core couplers that have now been commercialised. In 2014 he joined the Institute for Photonics and Advanced Sensing (IPAS) at the University of Adelaide as a Postdoctoral Fellow, where he researched nonlinear phenomena in whispering gallery mode microresonators, optical data storage and mode-division multiplexing. In 2016, he joined the University of South Australia as a senior research fellow. In 2019 he started a senior research fellow position within the ARC IDEAL hub working on optofuidic devices. Dr Riesen is also actively teaching undergraduate physics courses including 1st year Applied Physics. Dr. Riesen is also co-founder of the Australian start-up Modular Photonics Pty Ltd, which specializes in 3D waveguide-based photonic devices which are sold across the globe. Dr Riesen is a visiting research fellow at the University of Adelaide.
