About me

Dr Penny de Byl is a computer scientist, educator, and curriculum innovator with over 30 years of experience in tertiary education and digital technologies. Currently a Senior Lecturer and Program Director at the University of Adelaide, she specialises in computer science education, with a focus on game development, artificial intelligence, and emerging technologies. As the founder and CEO of Holistic3D, she has developed globally recognised online courses and learning resources that have reached over 170,000 students. Her work bridges academia and industry, combining research-informed teaching with practical, hands-on learning experiences that prepare students for contemporary technological challenges.

Dr de Byl has received extensive recognition for her contributions to teaching, research, and educational innovation. Her accolades include a Unity and Google Mobile Game Curriculum Design Award, a Queensland State Government Smart Women in ICT Award, and multiple Teaching Excellence Awards from the University of Southern Queensland. She has also been recognised with a national citation for her sustained contribution to learner-centred, technology-enhanced education, and was named an Outstanding Online Educator by Udemy. Her work has been further acknowledged through research fellowships, competitive grants, and inclusion in national biographical honours such as Who’s Who of Queenslanders and Who’s Who of Australian Women. 

Dr de Byl’s career spans academia, industry, and entrepreneurship. She began her academic journey in the early 1990s and progressed through roles including Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor, and Professor of Interactive Media and Design. She has held leadership positions across institutions in Australia and internationally, including Bond University and Breda University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands. In industry, she has worked as a Senior Unity Developer and led game development initiatives through Aardbei Studios. Since 2017, she has led Holistic3D as CEO and Lead Curriculum Designer, while continuing her academic leadership as a Senior Lecturer and Program Director at the University of Adelaide.

Dr de Byl’s teaching is grounded in learner-centred, research-informed pedagogies influenced by Dewey, Weimer, and Prensky, emphasising discovery, engagement, and authentic learning. She has extensive expertise across computer programming, artificial intelligence, mathematics, computer graphics, game design, and multimedia, supported by over two decades of tertiary teaching experience. Her approach integrates contemporary technologies and game-based learning strategies to create engaging, real-world learning environments. Beyond the classroom, she has designed entire degree programs, developed innovative curricula, and produced widely adopted textbooks and online courses, demonstrating a sustained commitment to advancing STEM education.
