Ecoversity’s Bin Monsters Campaign was designed to promote correct waste and recycling practices to students in order to increase recycling rates in Hub Central on the North Terrace Campus.
The campaign took on a number of approaches to engage students on recycling including:
- new signage and information about what items can/cannot be recycled;
- a social media campaign with movie ticket prizes for students seen recycling correctly; and
- crafty reminders at tables, bins and on food and beverage containers (with support from local retailers).
The campaign revolved around two characters Larry Landfill and Rosie Recycling, representing two different waste streams. On average, recycling rates doubled over the campaign period and student engagement on the issue rose through social media.
The Office of Sustainability won a Highly Commended Award for this campaign at the ACTS 2013 Green Gown Awards.
