In April 2016, the University of Adelaide’s School of Agriculture, Food and Wine announced its intention to exit from commercial barley breeding, consistent with recommendations by an independent review of crop breeding programs commissioned by the School.
The University progressed its intended exit by canvassing expressions of interest in Australia and internationally for the licensing of Barley lines, and negotiated with several successful applicants following the EOI process conducted in October 2016. The University expects to finalise all licensing arrangements shortly, which will see its barley lines incorporated into the breeding programmes of several parties.
The University remains dedicated to Barley breeding in support of the industry. It continues to develop its expertise in plant genetics and pre-breeding as well as offering breeding and malt quality services to industry.
