Eureka Prize for Innovation in Citizen Science
Congratulations to Dr. Erinn Fagan-Jeffries
Erinn has won the 2024 Australian Museum Eureka Prize for Innovation in Citizen Science. This prestigious award honors the remarkable work in involving the community in biodiversity discovery and taxonomy. Through the Insect Investigators project, she has effectively partnered schools with taxonomists to uncover and describe new local species.
Since 2019, students have named 17 new insect species across Australia through this multi-state, school-based program. By combining insect surveys with DNA sequencing and taxonomy, 1,800 students from 54 schools have contributed to documenting over 5,000 insect species, significantly advancing our understanding of Australia’s biodiversity.
The Australian Museum Eureka Prizes are the country’s most comprehensive national science awards, honouring excellence!
Great work Erinn!
