Agriculture Scholarship to fund a bright future for Emma

In 2013, Bachelor of Agricultural Sciences student Emma Goode was working three jobs, commuting more than three hours each day and considering dropping out of University when she became the fortunate recipient of the Trevor Dillon Agronomic Roseworthy Study Scholarship.

This year the financial burden was further lifted for Emma when she was named the inaugural recipient of the prestigious Order of Australia Scholarship in Agriculture. The scholarship will provide Emma with $20,000 per year for her third and honours years and she will be introduced to a mentor from within the ranks of the Order of Australia.

“The generous donation of Mr Peter Benson OAM from the Riddiford Trust has financially helped me to continue my Bachelor of Agricultural Sciences studies at the University of Adelaide,” says Emma.

“Before receiving this scholarship I was considering withdrawing from half of my enrolled subjects to study part-time so that I could increase my hours of paid work. I can now continue full-time and embrace all of what the degree has to offer, without the financial burden.”

With a heavy work-load Emma has still found time to volunteer for a ‘Big Sister’ program supporting children in remote areas and has had a long involvement with gymkhanas, sports events and carnivals. While at school Emma conducted a business which involved breaking and training horses, re-education and supplying horses for clients and she attained many SA and interstate Awards for Quarter Horse showing.

Prior to commencing her studies Emma was working within the beef cattle industry as part of a stock team, inspiring her to further her education and have an impact within the Australian agricultural industry.

“The Bachelor of Agricultural Sciences has just blown me away – we have been exposed to so many opportunities within the industry, more than I ever imagined,” says Emma.

“It is a science based course but not only have we experienced and gained laboratory skills, there has been a strong focus out in the field. The lecturers are eager to share their extensive knowledge and to give feedback.”

Reflecting her passion for the industry, Emma’s goals include becoming an advocate for farmers and contributing to the improvement of Australia’s sustainability in agriculture for future generations.

“It is a great honour and blessing to be a recipient of an Order of Australia Association Foundation Scholarship. It is a life changing opportunity and I am sincerely thankful to all involved,” says Emma.

“The more I learn and become involved within the agricultural industry the more excited I am about the future.”
