Taras Ochota Scholarship Fund

Taras Ochota was a charismatic, fun loving, brilliant, “once in a generation” winemaker who helped change the world’s perceptions of Australian wines. In 2020, Taras’ life was tragically cut short from a debilitating illness. His death was a huge loss to all those who knew and loved him.

The Taras Ochota Scholarship Fund has been established to provide support to aspiring winemakers studying viticulture and oenology or related programs at the University of Adelaide who are experiencing financial disadvantage.

Taras Ochota

Taras influenced a generation of people who have drawn inspiration from the way he thought, felt about and made wine. He was a loving husband, father and son, and was loved by many.

While working with important winemakers in South Australia, and traveling the world learning the art of wine making, Taras completed a graduate diploma in Oenology from the University of Adelaide in 2005.

Soon after, Taras and his wife Amber set up their own Adelaide Hills winery, Ochota Barrels. Here they made beautiful and elegant wines with minimal intervention that cemented Taras as one of Australia’s most influential and beloved winemakers.

In 2020, Taras’ life was tragically cut short from a debilitating illness. His death was a huge loss to all those who knew and loved him.

Taras had shared his passion for, and expertise in winemaking generously and openly with others. His willingness to exchange knowledge and share his connections are just some of the many reasons he was so dearly loved.

The Taras Ochota Scholarship Fund has been established to provide financial support to aspiring winemakers studying viticulture and oenology or related programs at the University of Adelaide.

Coming from a family of educators, with a background in viticulture, Taras was the first of his family to make wine professionally. The Taras Ochota Scholarship Fund can provide access and support to students who wish to do the same, ushering in a new wave of first-generation wine innovation.

Establishing this fund in his name is a fitting way to honour Taras. It will ensure his legacy as a winemaker continues to be shared with future generations.

With your support, we aspire to raise $150,000 which can be used to provide a perpetual endowment for a scholarship named in Taras’ honour. Any amount that is raised will be used to directly support students studying viticulture and oenology or related programs at the University of Adelaide.
