Financial support package announced to support students in COVID-19 crisis

To our students, staff, partners, and broader University community,

Like me, you are all probably feeling a little unsettled by the significant and sudden changes to our work, study, and home life. It has taken some time to get used to social distancing and other preventative measures to battle COVID-19, but our community is resilient, adaptable, and agile. I have been inspired and impressed by the ways in which students and staff are rising to the challenge; organising new ways of working and coming together in support of one another.

The University has already taken some steps to provide further support to affected students. These include:

  • Global Adelaide, a one-stop-shop of resources for students seeking ways to connect with University and other services
  • Student Support Package, including academic, wellbeing, and emergency financial support.

The University of Adelaide has a long history of supporting international students to experience the world-class education and way of life for which we are known. We want to continue to offer these opportunities to our international students around the world, now and into the future.

We acknowledge that many of our students may be experiencing financial difficulties as a result of COVID-19. Some are suffering a loss of income as part time jobs are suspended, and families providing support from overseas may face issues outside of their control. We stand by our students at this difficult time, and want to ensure that they are able to succeed in their studies.

To this end, the University and the State Government of South Australia have worked together to develop a financial hardship package for our students in need. I am pleased to share with you this announcement from our Vice-Chancellor, Professor Peter Rathjen.
