Adelaide is recognised as a powerhouse in the new digital era with the release of the 2020 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) confirming that the University of Adelaide has cemented its position as a global leader in a number of key discipline areas.

The news augurs well for the development of a world-class digital ecosystem at Lot Fourteen, and especially in relation to advances in cyber security, with the University of Adelaide pursuing its vision for a leading-edge “Information Capability” presence to be headquartered on the site.

“The University of Adelaide is ranked first in the country in Electronic Engineering (42nd in the world) and second in Computer Science (40th in the world). These disciplines are the core foundations of cyber security. Added to this is our leadership in Automation and Control (24th in the world) and Instrument Science (51-75 band in the world) which are critical components for Information Capability and the defence against misuse of information,” says the University of Adelaide’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) Professor Anton Middelberg.

“Our latest rankings reinforce our position as the State’s leader in research and innovation which will shape a better future for South Australia and the nation.”Professor Anton Middelberg

“The University of Adelaide plans to bring all of these world-leading capabilities together in to a globally connected hub on Lot Fourteen to give Australia the edge in building both secure and resilient information systems and capabilities and to position Lot Fourteen as a powerhouse of future-facing jobs and industries.”

The University’s leadership in this area is underpinned by key research institutes within the University including the Australian Institute for Machine Learning (AIML) (which is located at Lot Fourteen) and the Institute for Photonics and Advanced Sensing (IPAS), with over 180 researchers and the workforce of the future – today’s students – undertaking research in the key Information Capability disciplines.

The ARWU ranks universities across 54 academic subjects and is considered one of the most authoritative in the world.

The University has ranked highly in other subjects: Mining and Mineral Engineering – second nationally (7th in the world); Civil Engineering – third in Australia (25th); Mechanical Engineering occupies fifth place nationally (76-100 band) and Energy Science and Engineering – sixth (76-100). The University is ranked fourth in the country for Water Resources (31st) and fifth for Earth Sciences (51-75). Agricultural Sciences is ranked fourth (37) and Veterinary Sciences fifth (76-100). And Adelaide is first in the nation for Dentistry and Oral Sciences.

“We aim to ensure South Australia remains at the forefront of new ideas, driving new knowledge and new ways of using that knowledge,” says Professor Middelberg.

“Our latest rankings reinforce our position as the State’s leader in research and innovation which will shape a better future for South Australia and the nation.”
