GROW event: Focus on Germany

GROW: Germany panellists

On Thursday 12 August 2021, the University of Adelaide held the third GROW event – GROW: Germany.

Global Research Opportunities Workshops provide researchers with an understanding of research landscapes, funding opportunities, and highlight our international collaborations.

Co-delivered by Global Engagement and the Division of Research and Innovation, these workshops are designed to support our world-class researchers in understanding drivers of current and potential international collaborators in key international markets.  Presented as a series of 1-2 hour sessions delivered throughout 2021, each GROW session addresses a particular country or region, featuring representatives from foreign diplomatic missions and organisations, researchers with experience engaging in the region, and professional staff from Research Services and Global Engagement.

Facilitated by the Pro Vice-Chancellor International, Professor Jacqueline Lo, GROW: Germany featured special guest speakers Dr Judith Reinhard, Head of Science & Innovation at the Embassy of Germany, and Ms Katharina McGrath, Director of DAAD. Other featured speakers included Professor Volker Hessel, Deputy Dean (Research), Faculty of Engineering, Computer & Mathematical Sciences; Professor Heike Ebendorff-Heidepriem, Deputy Director of the Institute for Photonics and Advanced Sensing; Dr Katharina Richter, NHMRS Early Career Fellow, Adelaide Medical School; and Ms Lynette Kelly, Acting Director - Research Grants, Research Services.

GROW: Germany involved discussion on a variety of research-focused topics, including:

  • What German funded programs are available to Australian researchers

  • How each of our panel members began their collaboration with German partners and

  • What is involved in applying for a German funded project as a collaborative partner.

Key takeaways from GROW: Germany:

  • Germany is a research-intensive country, with R&D the backbone of the economy.

  • In 2021 Australia and Germany signed an Enhanced Strategic Partnership for greater cooperation. This includes areas that are of interest to the University including climate and energy; digital, AI, and cyber; sustainability; and space including defence cooperation in space. Further information here

  • There are many fellowships to start international connections and many different types of funding for Joint PhDs and research collaboration. Please refer to the GROW: Germany PowerPoint slides for further information.

  • Networking is key to making connections and you do not have to speak German to undertake research in Germany – most of the research is done in English.

  • Most grant applications for German funding are quite straight forward, and short.
