Short Programs

There are so many options for students who wish to take a short program overseas to complement their studies and knock out an elective or two of their degree! Have a look below to find some examples and suggestions that might suit you.

  • International Summer and Winter Schools

    International Summer and Winter Schools are short study sessions offered by overseas institutions, where you can take intensive courses for credit across a variety of disciplines in Summer or Winter School.

    Summer and Winter opportunities at exchange partner institutions

    The following International Summer and Winter Schools are offered by our exchange partners. If you wish to receive a fee waiver for your program, you will need to apply first through the Global Learning Office to secure an exchange place. The Global Learning Office will then nominate students under the exchange agreement, and participants will be subject to the clauses of that exchange agreement.

    Other Summer and Winter opportunities

    The following International Summer and Winter Schools are offered by non-exchange partners, or exchange partners where the program is not subject to the exchange agreement. You will need to apply directly to the host institution, and self-report your experience in the Global Learning Application System. Participants in these programs apply at their own risk and will not be enrolled at the University of Adelaide when completing these study abroad opportunities (which may affect payments from Centrelink).

    • Third Party Provider Programs

      For students looking for additional support in organising an overseas experience, third party providers are companies that specialise in overseas study programs around the world. Choose from their suite of programs, and they'll take care of the arrangements for you (inclusions vary). Providers may offer internships, placements, volunteer opportunities, and study abroad programs.

      Please note that students will not be enrolled at the University of Adelaide when completing these study abroad opportunities and this may affect payments from Centrelink.

    • Internships

      Completing an overseas internship can give you an edge when you're ready to start your career. Internship organisations have the industry connections needed to set you up with your overseas opportunity. Alternatively, you can arrange your own internship. Check with your academic area to find out if an internship can be credited to your degree!

      Please note that students may not necessarily be enrolled at the University of Adelaide when completing these study abroad opportunities and this may affect payments from Centrelink.

      The University of Adelaide has entered a partnership with Jeumont Electric, a major equipment supplier to the power generation and conversion markets. Jeumont Electric are currently offering internships in the fields of mechanical and electrical engineering.

    • Placements

      Students in many degree programs are required to complete placements as part of their program certification requirements. Most students arrange their own international placements.

      Project Everest Engineers Without Borders

      Project Everest offers placements that may be suitable for students from all faculties.

      For Engineering students, you may be able to complete some of your Engineering practical experience requirement with Engineers Without Borders (EWB) Design Summits or Project Everest.

      Apply to the provider first and receive acceptance into the program. You will then need to register your program through the Global Learning Application System and request faculty approval. Please note that students will not be enrolled at the University of Adelaide when completing these study abroad opportunities and this may affect payments from Centrelink.

    • Volunteering

      Volunteering overseas can provide you with important life skills including problem-solving, communication, leadership and self-awareness. Additionally, you could make a real difference to a community overseas while gaining a global perspective and seeing the world. Although some volunteering may not be recognised for credit toward your degree, it could be a way for you to 'get your foot in the door' in your future industry and gain some experience. Volunteering overseas looks great on your resume.

      Applications

      Apply to your chosen volunteer organisation first and receive acceptance into the program. You will then need to register your program through the Global Learning Application System. There are two options for this. If you intend to apply for credit toward your degree, you should select one of the for credit options including; study abroad, internships or placements. If you are not intending to apply for credit, you should select the option 'Non-credit Programs'.

      Please note that students will not be enrolled at the University of Adelaide when completing these study abroad opportunities and this may affect payments from Centrelink.

    • Study Abroad

      If you wish to study at an overseas university that is not a partner institution of the University of Adelaide (or a partner that does not have exchange places available in your desired study period), you can apply as a fee-paying student directly to that institution.

      Usually students who participate in Study Abroad programs already have an idea of where they want to study. If you are looking for a destination, database websites such as www.studyabroad.com may help you narrow down your options.

      Please note that students will not be enrolled at the University of Adelaide when completing these study abroad opportunities and this may affect payments from Centrelink.

      Once you have found your desired program you will then need to register your intention to complete that program through the Global Learning Application System and request faculty approval.

    • Other International Experiences

      Some students may wish to take an overseas experience that does not fulfil any of the requirements of their degree, but would complement their studies. If you are in this situation, you may still be able to obtain University travel insurance if your experience is endorsed by your Head of School. Provide your Head of School approval in the Global Learning Application System, and you're set!
