About Human Resources (HR)

The Human Resources (HR) function partners with the University to enable and support a culture of high engagement, commitment and performance by:
  • designing relevant policies and frameworks,
  • facilitating context-specific capability development, and
  • offering efficient, timely, consistent and fit for purpose services across the full scope of HR functions.

The HR Branch provides core and shared services to University staff, managers, and titleholders of the University in accordance with the HR Service Catalogue.

Meet our HR Executive Director

Elysia Ryan, Executive Director, HR

Elysia Ryan is the Executive Director of Human Resources at the University of Adelaide, responsible for leading the Human Resources function comprising Organisational Development, HR Advisory, Staff Recruitment, HR Operations and Health, Safety & Wellbeing.

Elysia is a long standing professional staff member, having worked at the University of Adelaide for over 18 years, the last four of which have been in the role of Executive Director, and previously in roles that have crossed a range of professional staff functions, including student facing roles. Elysia is also a proud alumna of the University having graduated with a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Laws (Hons), and a Master of Business Administration.

Elysia is a Member of the Australian Human Resources Institute.


HR Team Responsibilities

The HR Branch is organised into four HR functional portfolios, as follows:

Tina Gevaux, Director, Organisational Development

Organisational Development

Led by Tina Gevaux, Director, Organisational Development, the portfolio is responsible for designing strategies, frameworks and tools to support talent management, change, and organisational design and to coordinate staff gender equity initiatives. This portfolio is responsible for administering the staff survey and designing tools and programs to support leadership and professional development initiatives across the University.


Jane Welch, Director, HR Advisory

HR Advisory

Led by Jane Welch, Director, HR Advisory, the portfolio groups the HR Service Centre, HR Advisors and workplace relations, including employment policy, in order to provide a coordinated HR Advisory service to the University. The HR Advisory portfolio provides support to people leaders and staff across a range of inquiries including self-service support, specified personal ‘how to’ questions, and triaging of inquiries where specific HR expertise is required. It also provides support on employee relations and workplace relations issues and informal and formal case management. It is responsible for interpreting the Enterprise Agreement, and for designing and maintaining employment and workplace policy and procedures. In addition, it supports major change processes and coaches people leaders on effective strategies including for managing unsatisfactory performance.


Lou Howie, Director, HR Shared Services

HR Shared Services

Led by Lou Howie, Director, HR Shared Services, the portfolio consists of separate Recruitment and HR Operations teams. The Recruitment team defines frameworks and tools for recruitment and remuneration. The Recruitment Team provides advice and support for hiring coordinators and hiring managers on recruitment and selection policy/processes, document compliance obligations including visas, as well as supporting development and classification of position descriptions, and maintaining a library of current position descriptions. The Recruitment Team is responsible for the issuing of employment contracts, with a focus on continuing to improve time to offer. The HR Operations Team, also within the HR Shared Services portfolio, is responsible for the frameworks and governance processes/protocols to meet payroll and superannuation compliance requirements on behalf of the University. It delivers payroll and superannuation processing, provides advice, options modelling and process support around payroll matters, including around maternity leave options. The team also provide HR systems security and user support; and maintains staff and position data to retain confidence in the HR System as a system of record in the University.


Gerald Buttfield, Director, Health, Safety and Wellbeing

Health, Safety and Wellbeing (HSW)

Led by Gerald Buttfield, Director, HSW, the portfolio supports and maintains the University’s HSW Management Framework and supports the HR Branch in respect of HR and HSW related risks, legislative compliance and internal/external audit processes. The HSW portfolio provides core services such as the management of the University’s self-insurance licence, the formulation of safety and injury management policy and procedure, and assists with the formulation of strategies and the co-ordination of resultant activities to enable the University to maintain a safe workplace and compliance with the Return to Work SA Code of Conduct for Self-Insurance. The HSW portfolio also provides a range of shared services including the provision of HSW advice and case management for workers compensation claims. In addition, the HSW portfolio develops and maintains organisational frameworks, tools and initiatives to support staff wellbeing.
