Chief Wardens
This page contains a list of the current chief wardens for various buildings and areas on campus, and provides templates to support network operations.
The Chief Warden is responsible for overseeing the recruiting and managing the operation of a warden network. In the event of an emergency, the chief warden is the individual responsible for coordinating the network's response efforts and communicating with emergency services. As such, the chief warden plays a critical role in maintaining the safety and security of the building and its occupants.
The HSW Team coordinates regular Chief Warden forums to support and better enable the Chief Wardens in their role.
Chief Wardens can update the Warden Register by submitting a register amendment request. Where an area has a Chief Warden vacancy, staff who have an interest in the role can volunteer by contacting the HSW team.
Sheds, small buildings, or buildings with very limited numbers of occupants do not need a Chief Warden. The need is determined by the Director Health, Safety and Wellbeing based on their review of University Buildings.
In some cases, the evacuation of buildings is managed by Security or in leased buildings by the external building management – in these cases there is no Chief Warden appointed by the University. In this situation, send changes/updates to warden details to emergmgt@adelaide.edu.au.
For any questions or concerns, please contact the HSW Team.
Chief warden allowance
In recognition of the responsibility of recruiting and managing the emergency response team for a major building, the Chief Warden is paid an allowance ($500 p.a. paid in fortnightly instalments). The allowance is only paid where there is a sizeable network to coordinate as determined by the Director Health, Safety and Wellbeing. All Chief Warden allowance payments must be authorised by the Director Health, Safety and Wellbeing.

Warden Helmets/Caps
Chief Wardens need to ensure they coordinate the warden helmet/caps in their building. This means organising their collection when Wardens move building or leave the University so they can be given to the next person in the role.
Contact hswteam@adelaide.edu.au if you need a new or replacement helmet/cap.

Planned Emergency Evacuation Exercises (EEEs)
2 of these are conducted a year by CHUBB and they must be planned. Chief Warden must advise the warden network and building occupants the date in advance.
One of EEEs must be a fire evacuation to test the operation and performance of the Warden Network. The other can be determined by the Chief Warden in consultation with CHUBB and can test any of the other Emergency scenarios - e.g., medical incident or bomb threat.
Documentation:
- Emergency Evacuation Exercise reports are accessible here.
- The status against scope of works document* from CHUBB can be downloaded here.
Contact mark.cooke@chubbfs.com if you need any information or details.
* Note this is a CHUBB record, and named Chief Wardens may not be accurate.

Recommendations provided in EEE reports
Chief Wardens needs to review the report provided after each EEE by CHUBB to address its recommendations. Where these are made, an action needs to be entered into UniSafe. Contact mark.cooke@chubbfs.com if you need any previous EEE Reports for your building.
Where Chief Wardens are unsure what is required to address a recommendation, they should contact the HSW Advisory Service.
Guidance for how to enter, update, and close actions can be found below.

Filling Warden Vacancies
Where a Chief Warden becomes aware of a vacancy in their network, they should contact Head of School/Area of the Business Unit that is the majority occupier of the area and ask them to nominate a Warden.
