Optochemical Control of Therapeutic Agents through Photocatalyzed Isomerization.

As modern therapeutic agents continue to strive towards new levels of spatio- and temporal control, light provides unparalleled opportunities for improved precision. Traditionally, such approaches have leveraged irreversible photouncaging reactions but photoisomerization presents a reversible alternative.1,2 Herein,3 we demonstrate “up-hill isomerisation” from trans- to cis- to turn on the chemotherapeutic combretastatin A-4 (CA-4)4, as well as other structurally related stilbene natural products by exploiting a Ru(bpy)3Cl2 photocatalyst. This process can be extended to an in cellulo setting to allow selective activation of the CA-4 analogue trimethoxy resveratrol (Res-3M) with associated potent cytotoxicity and disruption of microtubule dynamics.

Insects can teach computers to see

Insects possess a remarkable visual system capable of performing a variety of tasks in a three-dimensional dynamic and cluttered environment. Electrophysiological recordings from dragonflies have provided insights into how these visual systems decode and interpret information from the environment to provide relevant cues for behaviour. Here I will discuss how models developed from these experiments can be developed and some of their applications.
