IPAS Students Sweep the 3 Minute Thesis Final at the University of Adelaide
The University of Adelaide hosted an inspiring 3 Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition Final, where postgraduate students showcased their ability to communicate complex research in just three minutes. The results were a clean sweep for IPAS. Ané Kritzinger was awarded both the University Winner and People’s Choice Award, while Sachin Kumar secured the Runner-Up position. Their success highlights not only the strength of IPAS research but also the importance of clear and engaging science communication.

Congratulations to Associate Professor Kylie Dunning on being accepted into the highly competitive Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences (AAHMS) Mentorship Program. This mentorship will provide invaluable guidance from leaders in the sector, supporting her impactful work at the forefront of reproductive science and technology.
AFR awards University’s research commercialisation prowess
As part of its annual Higher Education Awards, the Australian Financial Review has acknowledged the University of Adelaide’s industry connections with an award for Research Commercialisation for its work with Institute for Photonics and Advanced Sensing spin-off company QuantX Labs.

Science Alive 2025!
Science Alive once again brought together three days of curious students, engaged families, thoughtful questions, and hands-on science experiences. This year, many IPAS members, including Dr Chris Perella and Dr Ben Sparkes, contributed to outreach activities through the Australian Institute of Physics (AIP) SA Branch, with volunteers from both the AIP and the Adelaide Optics Chapter.

IPAS was proudly represented by five outstanding students at the 2025 Faculty of Sciences, Engineering and Technology (SET) Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition. Three are moving up to the University wide final.
Our Poppies the pick of the bunch
Congratulations to Dr Sarah Scholten, who has won a 2025 Young Tall Poppy Science Award by the Australian Institute of Policy and Science. Sarah is working on the next generation of atomic clocks, developing a compact high-stability clock that outperforms GPS navigation systems for defence applications.
IPAS Members Join New National Centre to Advance Health Sensing Technologies
Professor Mark Hutchinson and Associate Professor Jiawen Li from the University of Adelaide Institute for Photonics and Advanced Sensing are playing key roles in the newly announced Australian Research Council (ARC) Training Centre for Transformative Health Sensing Technologies (HST Centre), a $5 million initiative led by the University of Melbourne. Queensland University of Technology is also a key partner.
