Kaurna Placenames Research
Rob Amery began to investigate Kaurna placenames during the course of his PhD (1995-1998). In 1996 Rob was approached by Dot Davy (now Dot Goldsmith) then working for the Adelaide City Council to undertake further historical research and to develop a Kaurna placenaming proposal, together with Kaurna people, for Council, completed in January 1997 (Website).
Rob published two papers (one together with Georgina Yambo Williams) in The Land is a Map (Hercus et al, 2002).
In 2006 Rob, KWP and the SA State Government Geographical Names Unit were contacted by the City of Onkaparinga to work on the Southern Kaurna Placenames project to research and map Kaurna placenames in the south of Kaurna country. The website with sound files recorded by Jack Kanya Buckskin was launched in July 2007 (see <www.kaurnaplacenames.com>).
Since 2008 Chester Schultz has become KWP’s principal placenames researcher producing detailed write-ups of individual placenames. Some of these are now available on this website.
Both Chester and Rob gave presentations at the Australian National Placenames Survey workshop held in Adelaide on 2 September 2011.
