Learning and Teaching Award Winners 2012

National Awards

The Office for Learning and Teaching (OLT) administers the Australian Awards for University Teaching on behalf of the Australian Government.

Award for Teaching Excellence 2012

Associate Professor Mounir Ghabriel, Discipline of Anatomy and Pathology, Faculty of Health Sciences
Mounir's passion for anatomy began as a medical student, inspired by his skilled and enthusiastic anatomy teacher. When given an opportunity to undertake a PhD, Mounir chose to study the nervous system. He re-discovered his passion when he was appointed as lecturer at the University of London, where he taught anatomy for 14 years. Now an Associate Professor at the University of Adelaide, where he has taught for 18 years, Mounir conducts research on brain swelling and trauma, and continues to inspire generations of medical, dental, and science students. His multiple innovative teaching methods include body painting, the use of colour-coded diagrams, digital animations and interactive models. His students state: "Mounir's unique use of sketches and coloured diagrams has created its own legend within the Medical School", and "it is difficult to sum up exactly how Dr Ghabriel's teaching affects you, it simply must be experienced". Mounir was awarded the Dean's Prize for Excellence in Teaching 2006, the Richard Pellew Prize 2009, 2010 and 2011, the Stephen Cole The Elder Award for Excellence in Teaching 2011, the Vice-Chancellor and President's Award for Excellence in Teaching 2011, and an ALTC Citation in 2011.
