Warning Notices

The Copyright Act imposes strict obligations on universities to bring copyright obligations to the attention of staff and students. The following notices must be clearly displayed:

Notice to be displayed at equipment capable of copying text or images

This notice should be displayed within viewing distance of any machine capable of copying text or images (e.g. photocopier, scanner, computer, fax machine, microfiche copier) which is accessible by students or non-staff members.

Notice to be displayed at equipment capable of copying audio or audio-visual material

This notice should be displayed within viewing distance of any machine capable of copying audio or audio-visual material (e.g. computer, VCR, DVD recorder, sound-recording equipment) which is accessible by students or non-staff members.

NOTE: Where a machine is capable of copying both text and audio-visual material (e.g. computer), BOTH notices must be displayed.

Part VA notice (for copies of TV / radio broadcasts)

This notice must be used if you wish to electronically communicate material pursuant to the Part VA licence, e.g. embed it in a PowerPoint presentation, make it available online, or e-mail to students. It must be prominently displayed either before or at the same time as the material being communicated appears on the screen.

NOTE: If you wish to make copies available online, you must have them uploaded onto the University’s streaming server by submitting a MyMedia upload form.

Part VB notice (for copies of print and graphic materials)

This notice must be used if you wish to electronically reproduce or communicate material pursuant to the Part VB licence, e.g. include in a PowerPoint presentation, make available online, e-mail to students. It must be prominently displayed either before or at the same time as the material being communicated appears on the screen. If you are including various items throughout a PowerPoint presentation, displaying the notice at the start of the PowerPoint presentation is sufficient.

NOTE: If you wish to make digital copies of books and journal articles available online, you must go through the Digital Resources Management Centre. The DRMC will insert the warning notice for you.

Music notice (for copies of sound recordings)

This notice must be used if you wish to electronically communicate material pursuant to the Music Licence, e.g. embed it in a PowerPoint presentation, make it available online, or e-mail to students. This notice must be prominently displayed either before or at the same time as the material is played or is accessible by students.
