Biography

Nancy Fotheringham Cato was born 1917 in Glen Osmond. She graduated from The University of Adelaide in 1939 after studying English Literature and Italian. A poet and novelist, she had also been a journalist and art critic. She was a foundation member of the Lyrebird writers (1949). She was also part of the Jindyworobak Movement, and in 1950 edited tthe Jindyworobak Anthology.

Nancy had many achievements in her life. She was actively involved in the Fellowship of Australian Writers and the Australian Society of Authors during the 1950s and 1960s, was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 1984, for services to literature and the environment, and in 1991 she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Letters by the University of Queensland.

Nancy died at Noosa Heads, Queensland, on 3 July 2000.
