Indigenous history spans thousands of years. Study indigenous culture and society and learn about its impact on the Australian population and way of life.

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures have deeply rooted knowledge systems. As an Indigenous knowledges and society student at The University of Adelaide, you will gain an insight into Indigenous perspectives on culture, language, the environment, history and politics. Indigenous knowledges and society raises questions about the environment, sustainability, livelihoods, health and wellbeing.

As an Indigenous knowledges and society student you will:

  • Learn about the significance and value of First Nations knowledge systems
  • Study how the past has informed the present
  • Discover how we can make use of Indigenous knowledges
  • Reflect on your own world views and how they relate to society and the world
  • Explore topics from Australian Indigenous languages to Indigenous music
  • Undertake your studies on Kaurna country near the cultural trail along the Karrawirra Pari (River Torrens) and the Tandanya National Aboriginal Cultural Institute.

The University of Adelaide is in the heart of traditional Kaurna country. Indigenous knowledges and society was created and is offered by Wirltu Yarlu Aboriginal Education. Wirltu Yarlu is responsible for engaging with and recruiting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as well as providing support to students during their time here at The University of Adelaide. As an Indigenous knowledges and society student you can apply your knowledge of Indigenous perspectives and cultural protocols through a work-integrated placement.
