Education / Teaching

Resources for students studying programs managed by the School of Education, particularly Masters in Education, Bachelor of Teaching, and Master of Teaching - for more information about the courses, please see the School of Education website.

In this video, David welcomes teaching and education students to the MLC, and explains how to read a word problem such as you might see in the LANTITE. You can find this video in Echo360 format here.

Drop-in centre

Visit the drop-in centre either face-to-face or online to discuss anything mathematical or statistical that appears in any of your education courses. It is our job to help you understand and use the maths you need for all your courses so you can succeed at a higher level. Check out the website for opening hours or a link to the online version.

The Writing Centre is also available for you to visit to discuss any aspect of improving your writing for any of your courses.

Statistics

Many students studying education or teaching will do a research methods course, which involves statistics and choosing what statistics goes with what research problem and data combination. MLC lecturer David has given a series of lectures to Medical students about this topic that you might find useful.

The stats lectures for medical students are on this webpage.

LANTITE test

The LANTITE is a test of numeracy and literacy skills for students in Initial Teacher Training programs such as Master of Teaching or Bachelor of Teaching before they graduate. It is administered by the ACER government agency.

If you started your University of Adelaide program during or after 2017, you will be required to take the LANTITE test in order to graduate. For students who started earlier, it is not a requirement for graduation, but in some Australian states, it is a prerequisite for teacher registration, so those students are strongly encouraged to do it because it cannot be taken after you graduate. For more information about these requirements, talk to the School of Education.

There are some excellent free resources, mathematics pathway to education, on the University of Tasmania website, which cover concepts that are important for passing the test, and are also useful for other aspects of life and learning. The ACER website also has practice tests that may help you prepare.

You might also be interested in these seminars by the MLC on the fundamentals of maths (fractions, graphs and algebra).

If you have any questions about any of the concepts or questions you find in the above resource, visit the Maths Learning Centre to discuss your questions.

The MLC doesn't administer the test or manage the rules for who has to do it so you will need to contact the School of Education for questions about test administration.

It is possible to make a one-on-one appointment with one of our lecturers to discuss the LANTITE, especially if you have already attempted it and want to prepare for a second try. To set up an appointment, email us.
