The Small Island Developing States (SIDS) are a unique group of countries that bear a disproportionate share of the impact of climate change, despite their minimal contribution to its causes. As a consequence, it is necessary to understand the rights of the SIDS to a legal claim to compensation for damage caused by climate change, including for induced displacement, and how to establish a 'loss and damage' mechanism that could be applicable to the SIDS. In designing a 'mixed instruments approach' to create a patchwork of legal avenues based on issues of liability, insurance, compensation, and governance, this presentation advocates that 'instruments mix avenues' approaches are better than a 'single instrument' approach.
