Barr Smith Library, Rare Books & Special Collections, Level 1

Cabinets of Curiosity are often considered to be precursors to museums. They began to emerge around the 16th century and served as encyclopaedic collections of objects which were not yet defined. The contents of these cabinets would vary, containing objects from categories such as natural history, geology, archaeology, antiquities and much more.

The books featured in this exhibition contain older and perhaps more unusual illustrations, based on specimens and descriptions collected on voyages of exploration in the 18th century, to newer more scientific illustrations from the 19th century.
