Executive Dean's Public Lecture series: Since the beginning of humankind there is evidence of dental disease and its treatment. In 500 BC, Aristotle wrote about treating decayed teeth and using wires to stabilise fractured jaws. Through the Middle Ages, dental care was provided by barbers who established their own Guild. It has only been in the last 150 years that the regulation of dental practise has been established, through university dental school institutions and national regulatory bodies.

Professor Lisa Jamieson will discuss the three main diseases that affect the oral cavity: dental caries, periodontal disease and oral cancer; and the causation, prevention and treatment of these three conditions, together with national and international statistics.
