10th anniversary celebrations in Singapore
Tuesday, 15 April 2008
An historic educational milestone will be celebrated in Singapore this Friday 18 April when the Ngee Ann-Kongsi and University of Adelaide commemorate their 10th anniversary as joint partners.
Former Deputy Prime Minister of Singapore Dr Tony Tan will be a special guest at the formal dinner, which is expected to attract up to 200 guests, including the Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Adelaide, Professor James McWha, the University's Chancellor, the Hon. John von Doussa and the President of Ngee Ann Kongsi, Mr Teo Chiang Long.
The celebratory dinner honours the achievements of the University's graduates from Singapore and the Ngee Ann-Adelaide Education Centre, and the vision of two of the oldest and most respected institutions in the Asia Pacific region: the Ngee Ann Kongsi and University of Adelaide.
A feature of the evening will be the launch of a Singapore Adelaide Alumni Fund to provide financial assistance to undergraduate students who are Singapore citizens or permanent residents, and are studying full time at the University of Adelaide.
Championed by Dr Tony Tan, the fund will further strengthen the close bonds between Singapore and Adelaide. The Ngee Ann Kongsi has generously agreed to match every dollar contributed up to SGD$250,000.
Established in 1874, the University of Adelaide is Australia's third oldest university and carries a five-star rating for prestige.
Currently ranked 62 in the world by the Times Higher Education Supplement, the University is associated with five Nobel Prize winners, 101 Rhodes Scholars and 103 Fulbright Scholars.
A number of high profile Singaporean identities are graduates of the University of Adelaide, including Dr Tan and the late Mr Ong Teng Cheong, the first elected President of the Republic of Singapore.
High Court judge Mr Justice Lee Sieu Kin, Singapore's Minister for Transport, Mr Raymond Lim, and the Senior Minister of State for Trade and Industry, Mr S Iswaran, are also graduates of the University of Adelaide.
