The University of Adelaide is expecting crowds of more than 10,000 people this Sunday 17 August for its annual Open Day, which gives the public a chance to visit one of Australia's leading universities.

There's something for everyone at Open Day, including tours of the historic and state-of-the-art buildings and facilities, a short film festival, live music performances, and public talks, including a special Forum on water desalination plants featuring some of the University's top researchers.

Open Day is also the major day of the year when prospective students, their families and friends visit the University to learn more about study and career opportunities.

This year, Open Day will also have an Olympic flavour. Some large plasma screens on campus will give members of the public the opportunity to catch up with their favourite Olympic event. Students can learn about how to get involved in the Sports and Clubs Association, where some of our current Olympians have made their start. They can also learn about the University of Adelaide's involvement in the torch and cauldrons for the Sydney and Athens Olympics.

Highlights of the day include:

1.00pm-2.00pm - The Forum: Water Desalination Plants: A Solution to Water Shortages or Drain on the Environment?

In the Forum, leading University researchers address big community issues in a panel format that gives members of the community the chance to interact, ask questions and have their say.

12.00pm-2.00pm - Festival of Short Films

What's "Behind the Door"? Short films from young Australians addressing this theme will be shown and judged. Come and see the new generation of filmmakers giving it their shot at industry and public recognition, and prizes.

11.00am onwards - Campus Tours

Every hour a new Campus Tour starts out the front of the majestic Bonython Hall. Each tour lasts approximately 45 minutes and takes members of the public through heritage buildings as well as modern teaching and research facilities.

10.00am-4.00pm - Bonython Hall Expo

This is the chance for prospective students and their families to speak one-on-one with current staff and students about the many study opportunities available and careers they can lead to. A wide range of faculty displays and activities will also be held right across campus.
