Human rights in China - free public lecture

One of China's most highly respected academics working in the area of human rights will give a free public lecture at the University of Adelaide this Friday (3 April).

As part of his visit to the University of Adelaide, the President of Shandong University, Professor Xu Xianming, will deliver a public lecture on Human Rights in China.

The lecture - which will be given in Chinese (Mandarin) with an interpreter providing an English translation - is jointly presented by the University of Adelaide's Confucius Institute and the Law School.

Professor Xu was appointed President of Shandong University in November last year, after holding the position of President of the China University of Political Science and Law from 2001-2008.

Professor Xu has received many national and provincial awards for his work, and serves in various capacities on many bodies both within China and internationally. These roles include Chinese Chairman of the World Congress of Philosophy of Law and Social Philosophy, and Chinese Chairman of the China-United States Joint Commission on Legal Education. He is also an adjunct professor of Peking University, Zhejiang University, Wuhan University and Jilin University in China.

Professor Xu's career has been dedicated to research in areas such as legal thought in modern and contemporary China, principles of the rule of law, issues of legal philosophy, theories on human rights, and constitutionalism and legal sociology.

He is the author of more than 10 scholarly books and has also published and edited more than 30 textbooks on legal studies.

The Confucius Institute, established at the University of Adelaide in 2007 with Shandong University, aims to increase the understanding of Chinese language and culture, and help build and strengthen economic and business links with China.
