World renowned British conductor Tim Reynish will deliver a five-day residency to Wind Orchestra students at the University of Adelaide's Elder Conservatorium of Music next week, culminating in an evening concert on Saturday 24 July.

Originally a horn player, Mr Reynish has carved out a successful career as a conductor, teacher, clinician and mentor, and is one of the leading conductors of wind bands and wind ensembles in the world.

He is a staff member of the International Chamber Music Studio at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester and was last here in 2003.

Sixty-five Wind Orchestra student musicians will spend a week under his tuition before taking to the Elder Hall stage for a program featuring Concertango for alto saxo soloist, jazz trio and wind ensemble by Spanish composer Luis Serrano Alarcon.

"We are thrilled to welcome back Tim Reynish, an international specialist in his field," says Associate Professor Elizabeth Koch, Head of Performance Studies and Head of Woodwind at the Elder Conservatorium.

"To learn from an international specialist of this calibre will not only inspire our woodwind students, it will also give them a real taste of the profession they aspire to."

The soloist for Concertango is local sax icon Chris Soole, who has played with the likes of jazz musicians James Muller and Cindy Blackman, as well as the English National Ballet, over the last 30 years.

Other works on the 24 July program include Diaghilev Dances by Kenneth Hesketh and Percy Grainger's rousing Colonial Song.

The Elder Hall concert is on Saturday 24 July at 6.30pm. Bookings can be made on 8303 5925. Tickets are $25 (adults); $20 (concession); and $15 (students). More details at www.elderhall.adelaide.edu.au
