Students and staff race for Vice-Chancellor's Cup
Thursday, 9 September 2010
The second annual Vice-Chancellor's Cup footrace will be held this Friday 10 September on the University of Adelaide's North Terrace Campus at 1pm.
Teams of staff and students from each of the five University faculties and, for the first time this year, the Division of Services and Resources will run a 4x800 metre relay race on the campus, starting and finishing at the Barr Smith Lawns.
Among the 24 runners will be Vice-President (Services and Resources) Paul Duldig and the University's Chief Financial Officer Shane McGregor. They and their fellow Service and Resources team members will be vying with faculty teams to snatch the Cup from last year's winners, the Faculty of Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences.
The race is part of the University's Inter-Faculty Active Recreation week, organised by the Adelaide University Sports Association to bring the University community together, promote healthy rivalry between the faculties and generate increased interest in physical recreation.
"The week promotes fitness, health and recreation for the University community," said Mike Daws, Sports Association Executive Officer.
"We've had a great week so far, with the Barr Smith lawns buzzing with students and staff taking part in activities including dodge ball, frisbee, badminton, bocce, giant jenga and table tennis.
"The Vice-Chancellor's Cup will be the highlight and we're looking forward to seeing if the new Division of Resources team will be able to hold their own against the mixed student and staff teams from the faculties."
The winning team will be presented with the Vice-Chancellor's Cup by Vice-Chancellor and President Professor James McWha. The Cup was originally awarded to Dr Charleton Yeatman in 1909 for the 'Best Overall Athlete' of the University and was donated back to the Sports Association by his grandsons.
The five faculties are: Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences; Health Sciences; Humanities and Social Sciences; Professions; and Sciences.
The recreation week concludes with an Inter-Faculty Basketball Tournament on Sunday 12 September.
