Free public lecture examines role of music conservatoires

One of the world's foremost figures in professional music education will give a free public lecture at the University's Elder School of Music later this month.

Professor Dame Janet Ritterman, currently Director of the Royal College of Music in London, will give a lecture entitled "The role of a conservatorium in today's world of higher education".

The lecture will be held at Elder Hall on Tuesday April 29, from 5.30pm to 7pm, and is the only public lecture Dame Janet is giving while in Australia.

Dame Janet was born and educated in Australia, but has worked for many years in the United Kingdom, building up a strong performing and academic record in music, the arts and education.

Other senior positions she currently holds include Chair of the Federation of British Conservatoires (currently there is no equivalent grouping of conservatoires in Australia), Chair of the Advisory Council for Arts Research Ltd., Chair of the Publishing Company of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music.

She was created a Dame in the Jubilee Honours List of 2002.
