Christine Assange will speak in defence of her son at a University of Adelaide public forum this weekend, titled "Julian Assange - Journalist or Terrorist?"

The public forum, to be held in Elder Hall from 12pm-4pm on Saturday 6 October, will discuss the current situation surrounding WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

The 41-year-old Australian activist has been holed up in the Ecuadoran embassy in London since claiming asylum on 19 June in a bid to avoid extradition to Sweden, where he faces questioning over an alleged sexual assault.

His mother, Christine Assange, is among a panel of high-profile speakers, including:

  • Australian Greens Senator Scott Ludlam - the most prominent Australian politician involved in monitoring the Assange case, who will provide parliamentary insights;
  • Greg Barns, President of the Australian Lawyers Association - barrister, writer and political commentator and a former adviser to NSW Premiers Nick Greiner and John Fahey, as well as the Howard Government;
  • Journalist Philip Dorling - former Australian diplomat, federal political staffer and senior government executive who now writes on security and international issues for the Fairfax group;
  • Human rights activist Gail Malone;
  • Citizen journalist Cathy Vogan - media artist and teacher who in 2006 won the Amnesty International Freedom Art Award for her work.

The forum is being organised by the University of Adelaide's School of History and Politics in conjunction with the Australian Institute of International Affairs (SA Branch) and Adelaide Friends of WikiLeaks.

It will be chaired by Associate Professor Felix Patrikeeff, an international political expert from the University of Adelaide and the President of the AAIA (SA Branch).

"This forum brings together a number of expert commentators who know the Assange case very well - in some cases through personal contact with the controversial man himself," says Assoc. Prof. Patrikeeff.

The forum takes place in advance of the Channel 10 telemovie, The Julian Assange Story, which airs on Sunday.
