How to get ahead in the animation industry

Wednesday, 6 July 2005

Attention aspiring animators: the University of Adelaide wants to help you!

The University of Adelaide is hosting a public seminar TOMORROW night (Thursday) featuring leading animation industry figures giving advice about how to break into the field. "Breaking into the Animation Industry 2005" will also showcase examples of recent film/TV, animation and online interactives.

Three of Australia's leading animation companies will be represented at the seminar: Rising Sun Pictures (whose work has appeared in Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, and the upcoming Superman and Charlotte's Web); True Life Creations/Mad Academy (a national graphics training facility) and CG Character (worked on Warner's Sound of Thunder).

The session is open to anyone interested in finding out more about a career in animation, and while aimed primarily at tertiary students looking to work in the industry after completing their qualifications, is also open to high school students and anyone else with an interest in animation.

"We held a similar event for the first time last year and it was a major success," Dr Dean Bruton, Senior Lecturer in charge of the Digital Media Program at the University's School of Architecture, Landscape Architecture and Urban Design, says.

"For young animators, it's a great opportunity for two reasons: they can hear directly from some of Australia's key animation companies about how to make it in the industry; and secondly, they have the opportunity to bring along their showreel and get feedback from our panel of industry experts on their work so far."

Tomorrow's event has been organised in conjunction with major computing group Adelaide Chapter of ACM SIGGRAPH, in association with the Digital Labourer's Federation.

Places for the session are limited and bookings/RSVPs with Dr Bruton are essential by phoning (08) 8303 4038, or email - media are welcome to attend.
NOTE FOR EDITORS: High-quality and visually spectacular animated videos are available for media use.
