Continuing Don Dunstan's vision

Friday, 12 February 1999

The Board of Trustees of the Don Dunstan Foundation met in Adelaide for the first time today, following the public celebration of Mr Dunstan's life and achievements in the Festival Theatre.

The Board of Trustees is chaired by former South Australian minister Greg Crafter, who succeeded Mr Dunstan as Member for Norwood. The Deputy Chair is Professor Mary O'Kane, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Adelaide, where the Foundation is being established.

Other Trustees are:

  • Mr Phillip Adams, AO AM
  • Ms Robyn Archer
  • Mr David Combe
  • Mr Andrew Dunstan
  • Ms Jennie George
  • Hon Barry Jones, AO
  • Mr Noel Pearson
  • Professor Hugh Stretton
  • Dr Jane Lomax-Smith
  • Hon Dame Roma Mitchell, AC DBE CBE

Trustees were pleased with the public response so far, however much more support was needed from concerned individuals, companies and organisations. The Trustees thanked the South Australian Government, which has donated $250,000 to help establish the Foundation and support scholarships.

Mr Dunstan and his family decided to establish the Foundation to continue research and education programs consistent with his life's work.

It will support research into social problems confronting Australia, promote the outcomes of this research and offer practical solutions. The Foundation intends to establish a Don Dunstan professorship at the University of Adelaide.

Donations to the Don Dunstan Foundation are tax deductible and can be sent to The Don Dunstan Foundation, University of Adelaide, South Australia, 5005. For more information call 1800 333 364 (freecall).
