Political leaders in public health debate

Tuesday, 27 August 2013

Members of the public will have the chance to hear about issues affecting health at a State level in a debate between two key political leaders, being held at the University of Adelaide on Wednesday 4 September.

The debate will feature South Australia's Minister for Health, the Hon. Jack Snelling MP, and Shadow Minister, the Hon. Rob Lucas MLC, in the University's Scott Theatre.

Organised by the Adelaide Medical Students' Society (AMSS) with the support of SA Pathology, the debate will be followed by a panel discussion on health that gives members of the audience the opportunity to ask questions.

"This is a time of great change in South Australia's health system," says event organiser and University of Adelaide medical student Thomas Crowhurst.

"With a Federal Election closing in, and a State Election looming, this is a perfect time to hear from the two most important political leaders on health in South Australia. The debate and the panel discussion that follows will be highly relevant to the future of our health system," Mr Crowhurst says.

The Dean of Medicine at the University of Adelaide, Professor Alastair Burt, says: "Our medical students represent the future leaders of health in this State, and it's fitting that they have organised this high-level debate to give members of the public the chance to better understand the issues impacting on health."

After the formal debate, the event will feature an interactive panel discussion.

The panellists are: Dr Patricia Montanaro (President, Australian Medical Association (South Australia)), Professor Justin Beilby (Executive Dean, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Adelaide), Dr Peter Rischbieth (Rural General Practitioner with extensive experience in medical politics), and Dr Sophie Plagakis (Junior doctor with diverse involvement in medical politics). Chaired by Dr Andrew Perry (Senior Emergency Medicine Registrar, Royal Adelaide Hospital).
