Open Day at University of Adelaide's Vet Centres

Friday, 11 October 2013

Alpaca shearing and feeding, Australian wildlife, discount micro-chipping of dogs and state-of-the-art veterinary facilities - these are just a few of the highlights at the University's of Adelaide's Veterinary Health Centres Open Day on Sunday 27 October.

Up to 3,000 people are expected to visit the University's Roseworthy Campus and join in the fun and interactive activities with a range of animals, displays and tours.

Visitors will be able to see for the first time the new multimillion dollar horse hospital - the Equine Health and Performance Centre - along with tours throughout the day of the outstanding facilities and services offered to the public through the Companion Animal Health Centre, the Production Animal Health Centre and the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory.

There will be animals everywhere: kangaroos and others in the wildlife ward; cows being milked; alpacas to feed; horses to ride; and dogs and puppies from the Greyhound Adoption Program and the Royal Society for the Blind. There will also be demonstrations of alpaca shearing and horse shoeing.

Those wishing to test their potential veterinary skills can have a go at the simulation endoscopy; and find out more about the Animal Sciences and Veterinary Sciences programs from staff and students.

"Come along and meet our team, and hear about the services the University's 16 veterinary clinicians can offer," says Associate Head of Clinical Services Peter Hill.

"Where else in South Australia are you going to see this combination of world-class facilities and such a broad range of expertise across all types of animals?"

Micro-chipping for dogs from the University's veterinary staff will be on offer for only $30. Owners should apply at the Companion Animal Health Centre reception.

Dog and cat owners attending the Open Day can also pick up a voucher for a free dental check for their pets.
