Professor Penny Boumelha returns to academic role

Thursday, 25 August 2005

Professor Penny Boumelha has decided to return to her academic role as Jury Professor of English from Monday, August 29.

"Professor Boumelha's decision to return to her academic role reflects a fairly common pattern of academic careers. Throughout her time in senior management roles at the University, she has continued to undertake research and to publish. Professor Boumelha now feels that, after a substantial period in a management role, she wishes to pursue the passion for her discipline that first brought her into university life," Professor James McWha, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Adelaide, said.

"She is a highly regarded, internationally respected academic and an excellent teacher. She has made an outstanding contribution to the University in her management roles over the last nine years.

"She has not only overseen the day-to-day operations of the core education activities of the University but has successfully led specific major projects such as the Quality Assurance processes and developed a comprehensive institutional review framework for all areas and coursework programs. In addition, she had overseen the faculties and strategic planning support, and led the University's Enterprise Bargaining negotiations.

"The University is proud and pleased to have Professor Boumelha continue with us in any capacity, and will support her in the decision she has made."

The Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost will be Professor Fred McDougall, currently Executive Dean, Faculty of the Professions.
