Uni welcomes G-G as Patron of Joanna Briggs Institute Foundation

Monday, 2 June 2014

The University of Adelaide today welcomed the Governor-General as the new Patron of the Foundation that underpins its internationally recognised research centre for translational health, the Joanna Briggs Institute.

His Excellency General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd), Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, and Her Excellency Lady Cosgrove, visited the Institute today to meet with researchers and Foundation Advisory Board members and staff.

The Institute's Executive Director, Professor Lyle Palmer, said the Joanna Briggs Institute Foundation would benefit enormously from the support of the Governor-General.

"The Joanna Briggs Foundation and Institute is delighted to have Australia's Governor-General as our patron," he said.

"In His Excellency, the Foundation and the Institute has an Australian who understands the positive outcomes that a sense of community can bring - whether that be local, regional or global communities.

"But more than that, there is an inherent understanding of our obligation to extend the hand of friendship and education to the developing world," said Professor Palmer.

"We are grateful that His Excellency is supporting our work in Australia and internationally, and we look forward to his ongoing involvement," he said.

Established in 1996, the Joanna Briggs Institute is the international not-for-profit, research and development arm of the School of Translational Health Science based within the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Adelaide.

The Institute collaborates internationally with over 80 entities across the world. The Institute and its collaborating entities promote and support the synthesis, transfer and implementation of evidence through identifying feasible, appropriate, meaningful and effective healthcare practices to assist in the improvement of healthcare outcomes globally.

The Joanna Briggs Foundation supports the work of the Joanna Briggs Institute in the development of a strong, reliable knowledge bank for the developing world, to provide access to this knowledge and to teach people how to use it through the Institute's 20 established Collaborating Centres and Groups in Africa, South America, Myanmar and parts of Asia.

The role of Joanna Briggs Institute Foundation Patron was previously held by former Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, the Honourable Dame Quentin Bryce AD CVO.
