Students take advantage of Winter School

Thursday, 26 June 2014

The end of the University semester is approaching but many students won't be taking a break before starting the second semester - instead they will be taking highly intensive courses in the University of Adelaide's Winter School.

Taking place between 30 June and 25 July, more than 1000 students take the opportunity to fit an extra subject into the academic year.

They will be joined by about 30 study abroad and exchange students from around the world wanting an intensive study experience in Australia over their summer break.

"Many students want the opportunity to get ahead in their studies, catch up on missed courses or perhaps take courses that might not otherwise be available to them," says the University's Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President (Academic) Professor Pascale Quester.

"Winter School offers our students increased flexibility to accelerate and broaden their studies and gives them the chance to follow their passions. It's part of the University's desire to provide the best learning experience we can."

"It's highly intensive study but students find it very rewarding and the success rate is very high."

Students from overseas often look for a short, intensive study session to gain some international experience. Most of those in Winter School come from the US and Europe where the four-week period fits into their summer break. There are also students from Japan and Malaysia.

"At the University of Adelaide we are building opportunity for our students to have a valuable international experience during their degree. We are delighted to be able to offer students from our exchange partners a high-quality study experience in Australia," says Professor Quester.

Some of the more than 40 courses in Winter School are also on offer to the general public for personal development - tuition fees apply.

Courses with places still available include 'Animals and the Law', 'The Australian Wine Industry', and 'Aquaculture - an introduction'.
